Cups and Grub and Young Artists aplenty!
Dirty South Cup Show and Competition arrives amid preparations for Summer Arts Studio, Men Who Cook
It's hard to believe that we're already talking about Summer Camp! But at River Oaks April cup shows bring June campers. Before we get to the summer camp however, let's talk about April's main attraction, The Dirty South Cup Show and Competition, which is now in it's 4th year.
Over 100 cups, beverages vessels, yunomis from all across the United States will be on display at River Oaks, chosen from the over 170 entries that were received for this year's feature. This year, the farthest entry, with a celedon mug, comes from Ryan Reich in Yorba Linda, CA. The closest to home is from Mary Campbell of Pineville, who is also a student at Louisiana College. Juror Sam Chung, himself a world renowned potter and ceramicist, has personally selected 81 of the entries for the show, and will also be on hand for a Opening Reception on April 20.
While the cup show is happening, preparations for our summer camp are already in full swing, making sure that our creative corner of downtown is ready for the young creatives to arrive. For over twenty-five years, River Oaks calls on the youngest of artists with offerings that include painting, pottery, acting, cooking and mixed-media in a variety of sessions, making Summer Arts Studio the longest standing visual arts camp in the center of the state. This year's sessions are:
Summer Art Studio 2018 - 4 Sessions
Painting in Paradise -- June 11-15
Celestial Inspirations -- June 18-29
The Heart of Downtown -- July 9-20
Forest Aspirations -- July 23-August 3
Painting in Paradise is inspired by bodies of water - campers will create and taste food inspired by the ocean communities while mixed media and painting projects will take on an aquatic nature. The all new bonus attraction for this session is a Luau.
Celestial Inspirations looks UP for inspiration, featuring pottery, painting, and mixed-media projects with a celestial vibe. Studio Groups will compete in the space race and finish up the session with a Space Alien and Cowboys themed bonus attraction.
The Heart of Downtown centers around painting, mixed-media, printing and ceramic projects all created with a downtown influence. Let the heart of our city be your inspiration and don’t forget to wear your festive holiday apparel for our Christmas in July Holiday Spectacular, the bonus attraction for this session.
Forest Aspirations draws from the forest and the animals that live there as the inspiration for the artwork and activities in this session. From forest painted landscapes to toadstool houses in the ceramics studio, the forest will be our muse. Session four’s bonus attraction, the Mad-Hatter Tea Party, is always a hit with the campers.
All Summer Arts Studio sessions are limited to 45 campers, so don't delay and sign up your child or grandchild today! Classes range from $155 - $250 per session. Need an all day option?
