Spring forward at River Oaks - big events are coming!
19th Annual Men Who Cook & Men Who Mix #MWCAM19
It is already time to recruit chefs for the Annual Men Who Cook and Men Who Mix at River Oaks Fundraiser - where culinary enthusiasts of the community pit their talents against one another in a no-holds barred competition of the mixing bowls (and cups). If you are interested in competing for the coveted Men Who Cook trophy this year (bragging rights definitely included), we encourage you to contact River Oaks as soon as possible as there are only a limited number of stations available. This sell out event has been a community favorite for 19 years and is scheduled for Saturday, May 18, 2019 from 6:30-9:30 pm. Tickets are $65 per person and Reserved Tables are $750 (seat ten).
Dirty South Cup Call
Also underway, acceptance of applications for River Oaks’ 5th Annual Dirty South Cup Call, where up to 100 artists from all over the country submit some of their finest drinking vessels to be named Best in Show. This year’s Guest Juror Doug Peltzman will be on hand to not only judge the traditional and non-traditional cups and mugs, he will also teach a class entitled “Inviting Form and Dynamic Surface” on April 10 and 11. The focus of this technique based workshop will be designing and finishing of high fire porcelain tableware in an electric kiln. The relationship between form and surface decoration will be explored through practice, demonstration and discussion. Doug will share his techniques on incising and inlaying slip into leather hard clay and bisque fired clay, sharing ideas and strategies about engineering pots specifically for runny translucent glazes. Cost of the class is $95 artists from beginner to advanced skill levels. The annual #DSCC is sponsored by GAEDA as part of the Art Center’s education series. The Cup Show will be on display from April 5 - May 25 with an opening reception on Friday, April 12th.
Summer Arts Studio - Art Camp and so much more!
Summer Art Studio is Central Louisiana’s largest and longest running visual arts camp with over 150 young creatives entering our doors between June and July for the past 25+ years! The visual art intensive summer of study will focus on a variety of art forms allowing students ages 5-13 to learn basic techniques in various mediums, creating detailed projects while having the ultimate summer camp experience. “Inspiration Through the Decades” will set the tone for this year’s summer camp which will also include special Themed Thursdays during each session. The instructors are as always some of the most talented artists and oh-how-much-fun it will be!
