A Creative Fall Season at River Oaks

As we move into the final quarter of 2023, River Oaks is bustling with a plethora of activities that promise to entertain, educate, and inspire. From galas to exhibitions to art sales, there is something to engage everyone—from the dedicated art lover to the curious community member.

Van Gogh Gala on October 28

No one does galas like River Oaks, and this year's Van Gogh Gala is set to be a high watermark. Themed "Haunted Hollywood: A Spectral Tour of Filmland," the Gala offers a dazzling night of art, costumes, and entertainment. "This year's gala explores the timeless tales of classic cinema, offering a unique twist to what people have come to expect from River Oaks. It's a fantastic blend of artistry and storytelling," says Rachael Dauzat, Executive Director at River Oaks. The event also features a mentor-star artist pairing for an exclusive art auction, blending professional artistry with community spirit.

Van Gogh Gala Preview Show, October 27-28

Before the grand event itself, you can get a sneak peek at the art pieces up for auction at the Van Gogh Gala Preview Show. Hosted in the Bolton-Davis Gallery, the preview will run from October 27th through 28th. The art pieces, each a unique collaboration between a mentor artist and a star artist, will be on display, adding to the anticipation for the big night.

5x5x5 National Call to Artists for  Miniature Works, Opening November 9

While the grandeur of the Gala could be hard to follow, River Oaks is up to the task. On November 9th, the center will open its 8th Annual 5x5x5 Show - A National Call to Artists for Miniature Works,  featuring works that adhere to the dimensions in the title: 5 inches by 5 inches by 5 inches. With guest juror Tom Richard overseeing the selections, the exhibit promises an eclectic range of artistic visions, all encapsulated in compact forms. It's an intriguing challenge to artists and a visual feast for visitors.

Porch Sale Holiday Art Sale, December 2

As the holiday season approaches, River Oaks offers a perfect opportunity for discovering the perfect hand-crafted gifts with the Annual Christmas Porch Sale - A Holiday Art Sale & Shopping Extravaganza on December 2nd. Unlike any ordinary sale, this is a chance to buy unique, original works of art directly from local artists. Whether it's an intricate ceramic vase or a vibrant painting, you're not just buying an object; you're buying a piece of someone's soul. A thoughtful, artful gift always stands out, and what better place to find one than at River Oaks?

Current Exhibition: A Nod to Tradition with a Fresh Perspective

While these events loom large on the calendar, let's not forget the ongoing exhibitions at River Oaks, which continue to draw crowds. Currently, the center features the works of Melanie Sherman, Aubrey Bolen, and Shannon Fender, each giving a nod to tradition in their own unique ways.

Melanie Sherman’s "Transitional Spaces: Navigating the In-Between" explores lavish surface decorations that harken back to 18th-century European porcelain. Aubrey Bolen, with his exhibition “Saunter,” focuses on landscapes, particularly those of the Kisatchie National Forest. He combines traditional methods with his own unique style to bring attention to environmental conservation. Meanwhile, Shannon Fender's "People & Places" takes a deeply personal approach. Fender captures the essence of human emotion and the spirit of diverse places, all through the lens of her camera.

Each artist explores a different facet of what 'tradition' can mean in the world of art, making this a must-see exhibition. "Three distinct artists that all give a nod to tradition in their own way and with their own unique perspective," notes Rachael Dauzat.

As we prepare to close out the year, River Oaks Square Arts Center ensures that it will be an ending full of inspiration, wonder, and beauty. The next few months are packed with opportunities to immerse oneself in the art world, and no place does it better than River Oaks. Mark these events on your calendar; you won't want to miss what this artistic haven has to offer.
