Early Republic & Neoclassicism (1776–1820s): Following independence, American art focused on establishing a national identity. Artists heavily utilized classical Greco-Roman styles to symbolize democratic ideals, primarily through portraiture of founding figures (like Gilbert Stuart) and historical paintings.
Session 2: June 22–26

Romanticism & Expansion (1820s–1880s): This era saw a shift toward the "American wilderness" as a central subject. The Hudson River School became the first major US art movement, using vast, luminous landscapes to explore themes of spiritual discovery and westward expansion.

Modernism & Urban Realism (1890s–1950s): American artists began breaking away from European academic traditions. This period ranged from the Ashcan School’s gritty depictions of city life to the global dominance of Abstract Expressionism after WWII, which moved the center of the art world from Paris to New York
