River Oaks Square Arts Center Kicks Off 40 Year Celebration: Honoring Friends of the Arts Center

As River Oaks Square Arts Center marks its 40th anniversary in 2024, it's a year dedicated to celebrating the "Friends of the Arts Center" - the ever growing, talented group of artists who have not only graced the studios of River Oaks but have also become renowned for their unique styles. This milestone year is a tribute to those who spent part of their artistic journey within the nurturing walls of River Oaks, a cornerstone for creativity in Central Louisiana. Many of these artists have since spread their wings far beyond the Arts Center, but their roots remain firmly embedded in the vibrant community and collaborative spirit that River Oaks fosters.

"There has never been anything close to what River Oaks offers to artists, and this unique collaborative usage of space," reflects a former resident artist, capturing the essence of what makes River Oaks a haven for artistic growth. The anniversary celebrations shine a light on these artists, underscoring the arts center’s role in shaping their artistic paths.

“As River Oaks enters its 40th year, it stands not only as an arts center but as a beacon of community, creativity, and collaboration,” says Rachael Dauzat, Executive Director at River Oaks. “This anniversary is more than a celebration of years; it's an acknowledgment of the artists, their journeys, and the unforgettable experiences created within the Arts Center's walls. Visitors are invited to join in these celebrations, to witness the evolution of art and artists at River Oaks, and to partake in the rich tapestry of events planned for this landmark year.”

The year's programming kicks off with Amy Glisan's exhibition, "Precious Things," in the Bolton-Davis Gallery. Glisan, originally from New Orleans and a former resident artist at River Oaks, returns with a collection inspired by nature, architecture, and religious themes, rendered in her distinctive folk art style. Her motifs, ranging from cathedral windows and garden roses to New Orleans houses and orange trees, reflect the elements that fuel her passion for painting. Accompanying her exhibition will be a unique workshop on floral design and folk art painting, offering participants a chance to delve into Glisan's artistic process.

At the same time, Martin Welch, another celebrated resident artist, will be on display in the Galerie des Amis. Welch's show, "SPLASH," is a vibrant journey through his life experiences, depicted in his signature style that combines vivid colors, Cubism, and Sumie painting techniques. His ability to paint memories and emotions onto canvas has made his work distinctive and highly sought-after.

Rounding out the exhibit line-up in the Stokes-Harris Gallery will be the “ART for ALL Outreach Programs,” showcasing the work of students from Hope House, Regency House, and Matthews Memorial, guided by instructors Carla Guillory, Laura Gates, and Lindsay Moore respectively. This exhibition is a testament to the impact of River Oaks' outreach programs, which have enriched the lives of over 700 students, including youth, adults, and seniors from under-served populations. The displayed artworks will be a celebration of creativity and resilience, highlighting the center's commitment to making art accessible to all.

As part of the 40th-anniversary celebrations, River Oaks Square Arts Center, in collaboration with GAEDA, will also present a series of workshops under the theme “Celebrating 40! ~ A Year of Creativity with Friends.” The first of these workshops features Amy Glisan, focusing on the intersection of floral design and folk art painting. Scheduled for February 6th and 7th, from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm, this two-day workshop is designed for artists of all levels, from beginners to advanced. Participants will delve into the art of creating beautiful floral arrangements before transforming these designs onto canvas, exploring Amy's unique folk art style.

The second workshop in the series welcomes renowned potter and studio artist Conner Burns from Natchez, Mississippi back to River Oaks. His four-day workshop, running from February 26th to 29th, 2024, from 10 am to 4 pm, is an opportunity for intermediate to advanced artists to deepen their understanding of pottery. Participants will learn techniques in throwing and altering clay vessels. Conner will guide attendees through the intricacies of form, function, and aesthetics, combining thrown, slab, and pulled components to create stunning vessels. This workshop is more than just a technical exploration; it will also cover aesthetics, philosophy, design influences, technical issues, and business practices in the world of art. Conner Burns, influenced by the natural environment and his parents' artistic backgrounds, aims to infuse his art with the essence of nature. His journey through graduate school, corporate world, teaching studios, and art festivals has led him to a tranquil life devoted to creating art that resonates with the soul.

Exhibition dates are February 8 - March 30, 2024 with an Opening Reception scheduled for Thursday, February 8th, 5-7 pm. The Opening Reception is sponsored by GAEDA and the Timothy Harold Buckless Memorial Fund. Project partners for ART FOR ALL are Rotary Club of Alexandria, LA Project Grant, RoyoMartin Foundation, Central LA Community Foundation,  Regency House, and LA Charities Trust.
